Conquering the Fear of Uncertainty

By Adrienne Marie - August 16, 2016

Being afraid of the unknown is one of my toughest struggles. We are all constantly living a life of uncertainty. Yes, we can keep an agenda and plan as much as we want, but God's plans will always trump ours.

I had been absolutely terrified of this coming year. Being my last year of college, I'll be graduating and hopefully starting a job. All within one year. I've never welcomed change well, I've always been scared of it. I tend to stick with something that's comfortable rather than take a risk, even if I know that taking a risk will be best in the long run.

I was listening to The Lavendaire Lifestyle's podcast called Be Stronger than Your Fears, Bolder than Your Insecurities. And before listening to the podcast, I had never even imagined not being scared of the future. It never crossed my mind that it was possible, I just figured I'd have to deal with it. But after listening to the podcast, I realized that God doesn't understand why we're scared of the future. Because it means that we don't trust Him.

But Jesus said we are the salt of the earth (Matthew 5:13). We are called to experience God's love even in the midst of uncertainty. Living a joyful life even in uncertainty can have the most positive impact on those outside of Christ. Non-followers will want to know where our joy comes from and they will want it too!

I looked back at my life thus far and realized, God has never abandon me, so why would He start now? It was in that moment that I decided to not be afraid. To not have anxiety. And to trust that God's plan is greater.

Isaiah 43:2 says,

"When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you."

It's literally directly stated in the Bible that God will never leave us. So why we still have anxiety? Because we have little faith.

I'm challenging myself and anyone else to pray continually to not be afraid of the unknown. And to trust and believe God's promise for the future.
