"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Matthew 6:19-21
One thing that I picked up was putting such a high value on material possessions. That the more money I spent on a handbag or a car, the more pride I would have because that would make me better than everyone else. It would mean people would think more highly of me if I carried a $200 wallet as opposed to a $10 wallet. Right? Wrong.
I was sinning and I didn't even realize it.
I was trying to find fulfillment in material possessions rather than in God. Caring more about what people thought of me than what God thought of me. And what I figured out was: material possessions will never fulfill you the way that the Holy Spirit does.
If all your life is about is how you are perceived in the eyes of man, you are sinning. The eyes of God sees what's in your heart, the eyes of man only sees the flesh.
Something that I asked myself in the midst of this was, if God asked me to give up everything I had, would I?
And I have finally gotten to the point where I can confidently answer, "Yes, God lead me."
Matthew 16:26 says,
"What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?"
God put each of us on this earth to glorify Him. Sometimes He blesses us with material possessions in order to bless others, not to live in greed.
1 John 3:17 says,
"If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?"
Everything on this earth is temporary. God can take anything away from us in a heartbeat. But heaven is eternal. We can't take our earthly possessions into heaven, but we can most definitely use them on earth to glorify God and grow His Kingdom while we're here.
I challenge you to ask yourself, if Jesus came to you and said "I have great plans for you. Sell everything you have and follow me," would you be able to?
Scripture:
"No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money." Matthew 6:24
"Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs." 1 Timothy 6:9-10
