Philippians 3:8 What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ.
The things of this world promise to fulfill us and bring us joy. Relationships, jobs, friendships, etc. This is the fleeting promise that this world claims. But CHRIST. CHRIST brings us a joy that surpasses any joy this world can give us. Paul says everything I have, fame, material possessions, friends, etc., they are all GARBAGE compared to knowing Christ.
It's so easy to look around in this world and be completely preoccupied by the consumeristic lives that others are living. It's like, I want the big house, the nice car, the expensive clothes. The things I don't have, I WANT. And that's my sin. It's my sin that makes me think, "well I don't have the big house, the nice car, the expensive clothes so therefore God is not good to me." But just the fact that I get to dwell in the presence of an all-knowing, powerful yet completely loving God and that HE knows ME, that alone if far greater than anything this world can promise me.
